Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat
Stable, rugged, fast, and relatively easy to fly, the Hellcat, Grumman's successor to their famous Wildcat, was designed specifically to counter the nimble Japanese fighters of World War II. Although it did not enter active service until 1943, the Hellcat accounted for 75% of the Japanese aircraft shot down by the Navy during the war, and was also used by Marine squadrons.
This example was based at Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Santa Rosa, California, and later became a target drone.
