North American F-100A 'Super Sabre'
"The "Super Sabre" was the first operational fighter capable of supersonic performance in level flight (although the Soviets claim their MiG-19 was first). A later version set the world's first air speed record above Mach 1. The "A" was the first production version of the Super Sabre and completed its first flight in 1953. Although designed as a daylight air-superiority fighter and a replacement for the F-86 Sabre, subsequent models were used as air superiority fighter-bombers and were active throughout most of the Vietnam war in this role."
