Ryan Aeronautical Company PT-22A 'Recruit'

"The Ryan PT-22 Recruit is a military trainer aircraft that was used by the United States Army Air Corps and its successor, the United States Army Air Force for primary pilot training. It was the first monoplane that the Army had used for primary pilot training, as all previous PT aircraft were biplanes. The "A" designation is for airplanes manufactured for the Netherlands Air Force in the Dutch East Indies."
